Walk to Defeat ALS | Charlotte, NC

As an ALS Association volunteer and captain of the VOICES for Vickie walk team, I want to thank everyone who participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS event. We are committed to making a difference by spreading awareness and fundraising in hopes of one day finding a cure.

I met Vickie about 8 years ago. It was Christmas Day. I was invited to her home to celebrate the holidays — and boy was I nervous! I almost laugh thinking about how I must’ve looked like a lost pup. If I only knew – there was no reason to be nervous.

Vickie made me feel so welcome, so comfortable. Her energy was so positive, so uplifting. She was constantly smiling, laughing … hosting like a boss!

You could hear her making family announcements, cooking Christmas dinner, handing out presents, taking photos of the family, even participating in NFL talks with the guys! She made things special and has every year since then.

She is the heart of this family. My family. She brings people together, plans events and takes care of the elder. She constantly surrenders herself to others’ needs … no matter how busy her life is!

I want to thank you Vickie – for everything, for accepting me… for always inspiring me and setting a good example. Thank you for all the words of encouragement throughout the years and for letting me marry my best friend in your backyard. Thank you for your support – no matter how big my dreams are. Now it’s my turn.

Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal disease that slowly robs the body of its’ ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient is 2 – 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

Vickie was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in August 2014. Since then, ALS has significantly weakened her legs and totally robbed her of the ability to speak and eat. The VOICES for Vickie Team is committed to sharing Vickie’s story, making a difference and spreading awareness to find treatments and a cure.

Please consider donating or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease. We are forever anchored in hope!

Enjoy a few random clips of us celebrating and honoring our love Mrs. Vickie Jones (as well as her Wells Fargo colleague Jan) … as we walk to create a world without ALS. Go VOICES for Vickie!

Keep up with AK.
